Health and Dental Services
All Head Start children receive health support as well as preventive screenings and exams—immunizations, physical and dental exams, vision, and hearing screenings. Children also receive developmental and social-emotional screenings to assess developmental milestones and the need for additional supports.
Head Start staff share strategies and resources with families to prevent tooth decay and promote good oral health and eating practices. Staff also support families to ensure their child visits the dentist for preventive care and treatment.
Good oral health is supported through:
- Dental screenings
- Daily tooth brushing
- Application of fluoride toothpaste
- Oral hygiene education
- Referrals for dental care and management
Nutrition
Head Start children receive free healthy meals, made fresh daily. A focus has been placed on preparing whole foods locally sourced. Providing healthy food and teaching children healthy eating habits at a young age prepares them to make the positive choices that lead to a healthy lifestyle. Emphasis is also placed on physical activities to aid in the development of better motor skills, concentration and thinking skills. Dietary accommodations are available.
Child Well Being & Disabilities
Early identification and intervention provide the foundation for school readiness, developing close, secure relationships with peers and caring adults empowering children to reach their full potential. The Disabilities and Mental Health program serve children with special needs and their families in an inclusive environment. Disabilities and Mental Health ensures children, families, and staff are supported through ongoing professional development, classroom observation, individual family services plans, individual education plans, and social-emotional plans.
Modifying lessons, recommending evidence-based strategies, speech therapy, and coordinating services between school districts and ECI, are among many of the services provided when your child with a special need is enrolled in the program. Ten percent of enrollment is reserved to serve children with disabilities.
Promoting mental health is a vital component of the work we do every day to enrich the lives of children and families at Child Inc. We know that to prepare children for school, we must support their social and emotional well-being. We also know that children’s parents and caregivers in the home and in the classroom benefit from resources that can support their own mental health and in turn, help support the children in their care.
The mental health team at Child Inc works closely with staff and parents to meet the mental health needs of children and families. Individual and group education and consultation are available to parents, teachers, family advocates, and any other staff working with children.
