Throughout February, Child Inc celebrated Black History month in style. The Black History Committee followed the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) theme for Black History Month 2018: “Africans American in Times of War” to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War in 1918 and to honor the contributions of African American war veterans.

The Black History Committee launched the celebration with an opening reception on February 6th, serving dessert and featuring photos and video from the history of African Americans serving their country during wartime.  It was very educational, and beautifully presented.

On February 14, employees were encouraged to wear red to celebrate Pick a Red Day Heart Health.

Throughout the month, Committee Members shared Black History Facts, specifically regarding African American participation in the military during times of war.

The celebration concluded on February 24th at the Meeting Place at Child Inc administrative offices with the 2018 Black History Summit and Military Appreciation Ceremony: Battles Beyond the Battlefield: The Struggles of African Americans that Impact Daily Lives” featuring summit speakers, Sabine Coleman of AA Youth Harvest Foundation, Elaine Mays-Lofton of FEMA, and Nelson Linder, President of the NAACP Austin chapter.  They addressed the wide raging struggles African American have faced through history and still face today.

Child Inc thanks Executive Director Albert Black for his encouragement and support, along with Victoria Williams (Chair) and the entire Black History Committee for producing an educational, informative, and thought-provoking month  activities and celebration for Black History Month 2018.
